Among Friends Baking Mixes Review
My family and I love snacks and junk food a little too much. This is why it is so great to know that there are great, healthier alternatives to the ready-made junk food snacks, cookies and cakes that are so easy to grab off the shelf at the store. Among Friends Hand-Crafted Baking Mixes is one of those companies. They make it so much easier to allow us to bake our own ‘homemade’ baked goods! We were able to review their phil ’em up Chocolate Cranberry and cj’s Double Chocolate cookie mixes. Both of these Among Friends cookie mixes are gluten-free, contain all-natural Whole Grains, non-GMO verified and “free of the bad stuff”. You can bake 30+ cookies with each package!
About Among Friends
Among Friends began with two friends, Suzie Miller and Lizann Anderson, who had one simple goal in mind: “to help people fill their kitchens with fresh-from-the-oven baked goods made from the best ingredients.”
Enter my 8 year old kid-baker. As soon as she seen these arrive, she was ready to bake them – with or without me. She’s a chocolate freak yet still loves to make healthy food choices. Yes, she’s 8! So, of course, she wanted to try the Double Chocolate the most. The instructions printed on the back are easy to follow with only 3 ingredients needed: eggs, vanilla and butter (or substitute).
cj’s Double Chocolate cookie mix
This cookie mix is more of a brownie-bite. We mixed this one first and it seemed to be a bit too dry. The instructions said to beat on low speed or by hand. We started by hand then switched to beating it. Just make sure to use a large bowl or mixer because it seemed to fling the dry mix around. Of course the kid-baker thought this was hilarious! While forming them mix into balls with our hands it seemed to fall apart a bit because it still seemed a bit too dry. While baking the first bath of them, I decided to use my hands to mix it up more & it seemed to form better. We were then able to make better cookies during the second batch. We even added a bit of sugar on top before baking! Instructions said to bake for 7 – 9 minutes until just set but I had to add an extra 5 minutes because it wasn’t baked through. It could have been because they didn’t seem to be mixed properly.
These Double Chocolate cookies were delicious, soft and moist despite the dryness while mixing. You wouldn’t even know that they are a healthier version!
phil ’em up Chocolate Cranberry
This is an oatmeal cookie with chocolate chips, coconut and cranberries. I was actually pleasantly surprised to learn there was coconut in it after eating it because I didn’t taste it and I’m not that big of a fan of coconut! After making the other batch of cookies first, we learned how to do it better with this batch. We beat it first and it mixed much better. No problems whatsoever and they formed into perfect balls! Again, we had to add an extra 5 minutes to the baking time, which is also 7 – 9 minutes. I just didn’t feel like it was baked enough. They did come out perfect though!
The Chocolate Cranberry cookies were the most popular in our house! My oldest just walked up to me when she realized I was writing up this review and said that we HAVE to get some more of this flavor. I take that as a 2 thumbs up! I was a little sad to find out that someone else had eaten the last one. :p
