It’s that time of year again here in Florida – Hurricane Season! The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and having a well-stocked disaster kit is essential. Growing up, my mom always kept a few plastic totes ready with everything we’d need in case of a storm. Now that I’m married with my own children, we have our own kit that I’ve carefully built over the years.

Disaster kits aren’t just for hurricanes – they’re useful for any emergency. Back in 2004, we went through three different hurricanes. During the first one, Hurricane Charley, my in-laws were without power for two weeks. Experiences like that taught me how important it is to be prepared, and having a reliable weather radio is key. I recommend the Encore Buddy from Freeplay, which lets you stay informed even when the power goes out.

A weather radio that works without electricity is a must-have for any disaster kit. The Encore Buddy is not only clear and easy to use, but it also includes several features that are extremely helpful during emergencies:

Encore Buddy Features:

  • Weather Alert Function: Automatically broadcasts NOAA emergency weather alerts for your area.
  • Digital Tuner: Quickly tune to your preferred AM/FM or NOAA stations.
  • Back-lit Display for easy reading in low light.
  • Quad Power: Operates via solar panel, hand crank, USB, or optional AC adapter.
  • Charging Dock: Charge mobile devices with included micro, mini, and USB tips. A fully charged radio can power most devices up to 25%.
  • LED Flashlight: Bright enough to light your way when the power is out.
  • Retractable Antenna & Wrist Lanyard for convenience.
  • Audio Out for Headphones for private listening.

To build a basic hurricane or disaster kit, include:

  • Water: 1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days (for drinking and sanitation).
  • Food: Non-perishable items for at least 3 days per person.
  • Manual Can Opener
  • Radio / NOAA Weather Radio – battery or hand-crank powered with extra batteries.
  • Flashlight – plus extra batteries.
  • First Aid Kit
  • Cell Phone & Charger – solar chargers are a great backup.
  • Moist Towelettes / Baby Wipes – for personal sanitation.
  • Local Maps
  • Whistle – to signal for help.
  • Basic Tools – wrench, pliers, screwdrivers; useful for shutting off utilities.
  • Dust Masks, Plastic Sheeting & Duct Tape – for protection and temporary shelter.
  • Blankets / Pillows
  • Soap / Detergent Bottles – I like to fill empty bottles with water for handwashing and leftover soap. (Make sure to clearly label them.)

Having these items ready ahead of time saves you from last-minute trips during a storm, when stores are crowded and shelves are often empty. Most importantly, it gives you more time to secure your home and reduce potential damage.

Being prepared makes a stressful situation much more manageable. Take the time now to build your kit so you can stay safe and ready this hurricane season!
