Trying to Find the Holiday Spirit in Florida

Getting into the Christmas spirit can be tricky when you live in the Sunshine State. Holiday movies and TV shows always depict Christmas as snowy, chilly, and bundled-up. Meanwhile, here in Florida, I’m just trying to find that festive feeling under endless sunshine.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining about the lack of snow. I hate snow. But when your year basically has two seasons – Summer and Not-So-Summer – my brain struggles to switch into holiday mode. I mean, we’ve had our windows open for the past two days! It’s gorgeous outside. Nothing about this says, “Santa is coming!”

We’ve already put up our tree and decorated the house – nothing over the top, but I do have my tiny Christmas village set up and the handmade Nativity scene passed down from my great-grandmother. That Nativity is my absolute favorite Christmas decoration, and no one is allowed to touch it. Still, even with all that, we just weren’t feeling very Christmas-y.

Tonight, though, everything changed. I picked up hot cocoa and marshmallows while grocery shopping, determined to spark that holiday spirit. Over dinner, I found a Christmas classic on TV: A Charlie Brown Christmas. Who doesn’t love that?!

Afterwards, we watched Arthur Christmas. Cute, different, but definitely charming. And then – our son actually asked if there were more Christmas movies or shows to watch. I was shocked! This kid rarely sits still for one movie, let alone two. I scrolled through Freeform’s lineup for the week and set a bunch of movies and shows to record.

Finally, the warm, fuzzy holiday feeling started to settle in. The Teen looked over at me, sipping her cocoa with a smile, and said, “I’m finally feeling like it’s Christmas.” I couldn’t agree more.

How about you – are you still trying to get into the holiday mood, or are you already in full-blown Operation Christmas?
