Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges at us. Navigating through them as a family can be tough yet rewarding. Whether it’s dealing with health issues, financial setbacks, or other difficulties, staying united and resilient is key. My own family’s journey has taught me several lessons. I want to share some ways we’ve managed to keep moving forward. This was true even when the path was far from easy.

One of the most important lessons we’ve learned is the power of honest and open communication. When my husband was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and later with kidney disease, our world felt like it turned upside down. We made a point to sit down as a family and talked openly about what we were facing. We discussed what we could expect and how we could support each other. These conversations, though difficult, brought us closer and helped us understand each other’s fears and hopes.
As we continue to meet with different health specialists to gather more information about my husband’s condition, we’re constantly updating each other on what we learn. This ongoing dialogue helps us manage our expectations and adjust our plans as new information becomes available. Being open about your struggles helps in finding solutions. It also builds trust and empathy within the family. It’s okay to be vulnerable and to lean on each other for support during these times. A lack of communication can often be one of the reasons why a divorce occurs, as well as other factors, of course.

During tough times, it’s easy to feel isolated and overwhelmed. Staying connected with your loved ones can make all the difference. We found that even the smallest acts of support from our children or extended family members helped us through some of our most challenging days.
Creating a routine of regular check-ins or family meetings can help everyone feel involved and heard. Whether it’s a weekly family dinner or a simple text message to see how everyone’s doing, staying connected strengthens the bond. It reminds you that you’re not alone in this journey.
Creating a Support Network
We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a support network of friends and family. They have stepped up for us when we needed it the most. Asking for help isn’t always easy. However, leaning on others sometimes keeps your family strong. We’ve also turned to our community for support. Our crowdfunding efforts have been a lifeline for us during financial hardships.

Focusing on Mental Health and Self-Care
Amid all the challenges, taking care of your mental health and encouraging your family to do the same is crucial. It’s something that can easily be overlooked when you’re in survival mode, but it’s essential for long-term well-being. One of my favorite self-care activities is video gaming. It’s a way for me to unwind and take a mental break from the stress of daily life. Additionally, I’ve been prescribed anxiety medication, which has helped me manage the overwhelming feelings that often come with our situation.
Encourage your family to find their own forms of self-care. This could be a hobby they love, mindfulness practices, or simply talking about their feelings. It’s okay to seek professional help if needed—mental health is just as important as physical health.
Finding Practical Solutions
Tackling financial and health-related challenges requires practical solutions and realistic planning. We had to make adjustments to our budget. We prioritized expenses, especially with the added costs of medical care. Additionally, we needed to support our oldest child in college.

- Google Calendar: Perfect for scheduling appointments, managing your family’s activities, and setting reminders to stay on track.

- Trello: A visual tool that allows you to create boards and cards for different tasks. It makes it easy to manage both personal and family schedules.
- GoblinTools: A collection of small, simple, single-task tools. They are mostly designed to help neurodivergent people with tasks they find overwhelming or difficult.
Staying Positive and Celebrating Small Wins
One of the most valuable things we’ve learned is to celebrate small victories. During our toughest days, even the smallest progress felt like a huge win. A good health report from the doctor or finding a creative solution to a financial problem were such moments. Acknowledging those moments gave us the motivation to keep pushing forward.
