Hacks to Help Your Smart Devices Last Longer

Hacks to Help Your Smart Devices Last Longer

Smartphones, tablets, watches, fridges that send passive-aggressive reminders to buy more milk – our lives are basically held together by devices that cost as much as rent. So, when your phone starts acting like a confused toddler, or your tablet refuses to charge unless held at a 43-degree angle, it’s tempting to bin it and upgrade. But before you yeet your tech into the void (or the back of the junk drawer), let’s talk about some actually useful hacks to make your smart stuff last longer. Because no one wants to spend another grand just because their phone took one tumble off the kitchen counter.

Give Your Battery a Break

No, really. If you’re constantly draining your phone to 1% before plugging it in overnight, stop. Lithium-ion batteries prefer a life of moderation, not extremes. Try to keep your charge between 20% and 80%. It’s not just a weird flex from tech nerds, it’s actually good advice. Also, skip those cheap gas station charging cords that feel like they’ll burst into flames. Invest in a decent cable – your phone deserves better.

Screen Protectors: Because You’re Not as Careful as You Think

You think you’re gentle with your phone until it flies out of your hands like a greased-up salmon. Save yourself the existential dread and slap a screen protector on it. Yes, even if you “don’t usually drop it.” Glass screen protectors are the best defense against the dreaded spiderweb effect. And if it’s already too late, look into cracked screen repair before you start swiping around tiny shards of glass like a tech-savvy porcupine.

Turn Off What You Don’t Use (No, Not Your Feelings)

Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, location services, six open apps tracking your every move – your phone’s running a marathon while you scroll memes in bed. Turning off unnecessary features saves battery life and keeps your device from slowly overheating like it’s about to launch into orbit. Bonus: fewer creepy ads about that one pair of shoes you looked at once.

Keep It Clean, Gremlin

No, not a factory reset. Literal cleaning. Dust, pocket lint, snack crumbs—your devices are disgusting. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe down screens and a soft brush or canned air for ports and speakers. A clean device is a happy device, and no one wants their phone to sound like it’s broadcasting through a bowl of cereal.

Update (Even If You Don’t Want To)

Yes, software updates are annoying and somehow always show up at the worst time. But skipping them is like refusing to brush your teeth because toothpaste tastes weird. Updates patch security holes, fix bugs, and make your device less likely to implode. Schedule them for night-time so you can sleep while your phone gets smarter.

Don’t Treat Your Devices Like Disposable Junk

Smart devices aren’t built to last forever, but they’re also not meant to be replaced every time they get moody. A little care, some cracked screen repair when needed, and a commitment to not using your iPad as a coaster can go a long way. Treat your tech like a friend who holds all your secrets—and your banking info—and it might just stick around longer than your last three phone chargers.

Bottom line: you don’t need a degree in electrical engineering to keep your gadgets alive. Just a few good habits, a bit of common sense, and maybe fewer trips to the bathroom with your phone balanced on your knee.

  1. Thank you. I try to keep my devices around as long as I can. Heck, I’ve had a laptop since 2016. My phone is the iPhone 12.

    1. I am the same way! It’s way too expensive having to replace all of them, especially for multiple people in a household.

  3. lol Jess! I really enjoyed this post! I can see your sense of humor all over it! You are too funny! But you gave really good advice! I didn’t have a screen protector on my tablet and it now has cracks! I didn’t know there were screen protectors for tablets until a friend of mine told me she got a screen protector for her tablet. It was too late by then for me! I had already  dropped my tablet snd had the cracks!

Another part of your post that stood out to me was battery life. I generally like to drain my devices down and charge them up to 100%. My family has always been telling me Thats not good, and they’ve actually been giving me the battery advice you have here in your post! I didn’t want to listen though! lol. Old habits die hard! I might have to start changing my habit though and start following this advice. That will be hard though for me though! I’m pretty stubborn! lol. Thankyou for sharing this post!

    1. HAHA thank you! Yes, I was bad about the charging thing too until a few years ago. Now I charge my phone overnight even if it’s not dangerously low & it has become a habit now.

  4. Haha. I feel called out. Yes, not letting it drain to 1% is always a start. Something I try but often end up with. That being said I still have my iPhone 7 plus. It’s going strong, it works so have not found a reason to change it. This was a fun post, thank you for sharing Jess.

    1. Haha, I’m right there with you – my phone has definitely hit that 1% more times than I’d like to admit! That’s awesome that your iPhone 7 Plus is still going strong though. I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
