Affordable Online Tutoring from Sofatutor

Even though we have been homeschooling for the past 10 years, this does not mean that we know what we are doing. Every year seems like the first year since learning styles seems to constantly change – I’ve mentioned this many times before. Our nerdlings seem to learn better online and it can be a bit expensive with 3 of them. I was so happy when I was given the chance to test run the Affordable Online Tutoring from Sofatutor. They offered me 3 accounts so each nerdling could have their own and I set them up right away.

*Our review of sofatutor is from a homeschooling standpoint.

We did a test run of the Algebra 1 lessons and were impressed with what we had seen. The teen excels in every other subject besides Math so is still struggling with Pre-Algebra. Even though she isn’t at that level yet, we wanted to see how sofatutor works and if it would fit in with our different learning styles.

Algebra 1 is broken up into different topics, starting from Basic Arithmetic all the way up to Trigonometry. Each topic is then further expanded into smaller lessons with videos, Interactive Practice Problems, and printable worksheets.

The neat thing about the Interactive Practice Problems is that you must get the answers correct before you can move onto the next problem. There are hints available and the students are able to access the video again to help find the answer.

The printable worksheets are optional and can be offered to the students when they are needing extra practice. From what we have seen so far, these worksheets look like they are set up like the Interactive Practice Problems, just on paper, and do include an Answer Key. (Thank you!)

Once a Topic is mastered, you can move onto the next one. You can access your latest activity in your account and, as for now, is the only way to keep track of activities.

Homework Chat is a great feature for students to gain access to a credential teachers. They will answer any questions the student has to help them master their lessons.

I was able to conduct a short interview with Stephan Bayer, founder of sofatutor.com:

1. Until 2017, the only subject available is Algebra 1, correct?
Not quite. We are planning to have the whole math curriculum online till 2017. We are planning to add other subjects as well but the timelines are not definite. In Germany we offer all school subjects and 13,000 video lessons. We want to go a similar road with our U.S. platform.

2. Will the grade levels and subjects all be added at once then or will they be rolled out? Do you have an exact date or estimate for when it will be released?
Yes, grade levels will be added Fall 2016 approximately. Other subjects will follow 2017.

3. As a homeschool mom, it makes it much easier to have records for proof of homeschooling, even if it is something as simple as printing out a list of all lessons completed. Will parents have a way to keep track of what the students have already completed and will there be transcripts/records for the parents to keep track of? Can parents opt in to receive student progress report/update emails?
We really appreciate this question, that’s why we are offering the introductory deal. We want to get feedback to include helpful features like the ones you mentioned and improve sofatutor.com to homeschool needs. At this moment you can follow the video lesson your child has viewed by logging into your account (My account).

4. Are the lessons sufficient enough to use sofatutor as a complete curriculum for homeschoolers, or as a supplement?
Right now, sofatutor is a supplement to textbook, a platform that offers digital support to the curriculum.

I am so excited to see everything that sofatutor.com has to offer since we were really impressed by the little we were able to do. If everything else that will be added soon is anything like the Algebra 1 lessons, then I would highly recommend sofatutor to everyone!

  • All my kids are grown. My one daughter, at one time, homeschooled her kids for one whole school year & she had to quit. She said it was taking a toll on her them being around her almost 24/7. Plus her 5 children had a few different age ranges & they didn’t take it as seriously as they did in a school classroom. But this does look interesting – especially for Algebra!! I did not like that subject! Sofatutor seems to be an effective tool!

    • Sue, Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your daughter’s story with me. I can completely understand how she could feel that way. Even though I homeschool, I’m not one who believes everyone should…it’s NOT for everyone…and sometimes I wonder how I’ve even made it! LOL I’m glad that she was able to at least try it out for a year. We’ve homeschooled from the beginning so all 3 of our kids have no clue what public school is like, though I do threaten to let them see for themselves sometimes. 😉

  • Such online websites are doing a great job by offering online tutoring services for the students at home with personalized attention. Students often hesitate to ask their doubts and problems from their teachers and parents due to lack of time or communication gap. But with the help of online tutors all such problems can be overcome by taking help from online private tutors at such online tutoring websites.
