Decluttering Week 3 – Kitchen

This past week has been another struggle with this declutter/cleaning journey. The one constant is the kitchen. I have become OCD about it. We are on Week 3 now and the sink and counters have been clean and empty the entire time. I am starting to think that my main focus is on that so I am slowly veering away from the other tasks on the list. I don’t see it as a failure though. I see it as the way my brain works and wanting to get one habit down at a time. Remember I told you that I’ve heard it takes 28 days for a habit to stick? I am getting close to that mark and it IS sticking!

Hubs was able to help his brother on a job and came home with a cabinet with a granite top. I fell in love with it as soon as I laid eyes on it. You’ve seen my completely outdated, tiny kitchen. I would love to have my whole kitchen look like this. Trust me, if we owned this place, the kitchen would be one of the first things to get updated along with an extra bedroom!

We were already planning on buying another pantry/cabinet that we have for food storage. This house has a teeny tiny pantry built-in that is basically only big enough for cans and spices. What were they thinking?!Decluttering Week 3 - Kitchen

We needed another one for our large kitchen gadgets, pots, and pans that really have no place and keep getting shuffled around to make room. Plus, hubs is so tall and hates having to bend over to get inside the bottom cabinet’s top shelf to get a pan. This new cabinet has extra deep drawers in it for pot/pan storage so it is much easier for him to get to. We also store some not-so-used items on top to keep our main counters clear and usable. Hubs set up a plug so I can even put my crock pot up there when I use it. The little side drawer is unique to us and I used it to store our teas, essential oils, and vitamins. I actually had to Google that to see what exactly is was meant for.

Because we were going through our kitchen rearranging things for the new cabinet/counter, hubs went on an all-out decluttering spree. Next thing I knew, he was tossing things that weren’t being used and needed and I walked into my kitchen to find the drawers were also rearranged! I think my decluttering mission has rubbed off on him! He made a completely clean section on the counter next to the stove to use when we make meals. Normally the counters would have the extra pans and such that we store in the oven that gets put on the counter while we are using it, which leaves very little room to make our plates and lay food out. Not anymore!

I’m sure things will still get rearranged a little more but for now I am happy.

How do you make small spaces work in your kitchen?

  • Good for you for sticking with it. I did good for a week then I got preoccupied with packing for our vacation, then going on our vacation and now I am trying to unpack. Next week I am back on decluttering.

  • I need you to come over and do ours. Our cabinets are stuff to the hilt!

  • The kitchen is a huge source of stress for me. If it’s a mess, the whole house feels chaotic. I ended up getting rid of things we don’t use regularly. I moved lesser appliances & such to our laundry room.

    • That is the exact way I feel and so I knew it was the first place that needed to be tackled & turn into a habit. We do have a lot of kitchen things stored in the garage on 2 little shelves but it is so cluttered out there.

  • I think your hubs did a great job. The one thing that almost never stays clean is my kitchen. I love to cook and I share my recipes so I’m almost always in the kitchen whipping up something. However that usually means that I have dishes, pots and what’s not in the sink and I almost aways take forever to get them clean even though I have a dishwasher. I’ll be cooking for the Super Bowl so today is my clean up day.

    • I get that….Kid Baker is always wanting to cook and I am teaching her to clean as you go & you aren’t done cooking/baking until the kitchen is clean. *I* never thought that way but things are different now and I want her to learn it as early as possible! When we have big get-togethers for holidays and such, I will definitely be using the dishwasher as well as paper plates..LOL. Hope you have a great Super Bowl party!

And by the way, hubs is still on a decluttering streak and decided to put the extra cabinets he brought home in the garage for storage. This means a major clean out of the garage! FUN! -_-

  • Your kitchen is gorgeous, hon! Good going!!

I have t-r-i-e-d to get my house is pristine condition….. It doesn’t help that my dh is a saver…. not a hoarder,a saver. Certain rooms are decent shape..not great though. It always seems to be a goal of his to clear/de clutter/clean. So that’s good, at least!

Love your counters and the marble topped island. I’d so love to have marble one day. I’d settle for fake marble though. “_

    TTYS Thx for sharing!

    • Thank you so much, Chris!! I would love to have the whole kitchen like that but we got lucky with the one. I used to be a saver, but since we have moved so much, I ended up throwing out things that have been in boxes from 2 houses ago. Actually today hubs started clearing out the garage to put some of the extra kitchen cabinets in there for extra storage space (w/out the counter tops though) and we ended up with sooo many garbage bags of junk. It was ridiculous, but felt great. Still have to put it all away tomorrow though.

      • Oh, and I should also add that the kitchen is the only place that looks like this! Once I get this ‘habit’ down I will move on to another room. *fingers crossed*

  • I have a tiny walk through kitchen in the apartment I am in–it is NOT easy. Thankfully there is a full pantry closet and lots of cabinets–just not much counter space. I love what you did with yours!!
