Why You Should Filter Your Tap Water

Water is essential for our health. It not only keeps us, you know, alive, but it is just all around great for our body. There are many great benefits to drinking water each day, but have you thought about what is actually in your tap water?

I know a lot of people who wouldn’t even think about drinking their tap water. They either buy their water in various forms or use a filtering system. We didn’t have a filtering system or buy our water, yet I was still drinking my water straight from the tap. I always assumed that “no color, odor, or taste” was a general rule. I was seriously mistaken.

Why You Should Filter Your Tap Water

According to a study by the Toxic Substances Hydrology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), 80% of our drinking water is contaminated with very low concentrations of chemicals. These chemicals are used every day in homes, industry and agriculture, and even pharmaceuticals. This even includes human & veterinary drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, detergents, disinfectants, plasticizers, fire retardants, insecticides, & antioxidants.

Top 5 Toxins In Our Tap Water

  1. Heavy Metals (Lead & Mercury)
  2. Pharmaceuticals
  3. Herbicides & Pesticides
  4. Chlorine & Chloramines
  5. Industrial Chemicals

I know that a few times I’ve had to dump out my cup of water because it had a funky taste. This isn’t normal for us and so just filled it back up & it tasted fine…or so I thought.

Filtering Tap Water

Having a water filtering system helps reduce even more of these contaminants. We have been thinking about getting some sort of water filtering device & now have an under counter water filtering system, thanks to Aquasana. As soon as it arrived, hubs hooked it up and we each had a taste test of the water. None of us were expecting the results. The taste alone of the filtered water was completely different..there was hardly any at all compared to our regular unfiltered tap water. I had no idea how bad our tap water tasted until I had a comparison. Our tap water normally tasted like metal & I didn’t even realize it! After using filtered water in my iCoffee machine, the coffee even tastes better!

Aquasana 3-Stage Under Counter Water Filter

The Aquasana 3-Stage Under Counter Water Filter has Selective CLARYUM® Filtration, reducing 66 contaminants while retaining beneficial minerals for optimal hydration (like Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium). Compare that to the leading water filter pitcher only reducing 5 contaminants!

NSF Certified Claryum® filtration technology independently tested and proven to remove over 97% of chlorine and chloramines. It also reduces:

  • Heavy metals like lead and mercury
  • Chlorine resistant cysts like giardia and cryptosporidium
  • Organic chemicals like herbicides, pesticides, and VOCs
  • Pharmaceuticals like estrone and ibuprofen

  • Activated Carbonreduces pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, VOCs and MTBE.
  • Catalytic Carbontargets chlorine and chloramines.
  • Ion Exchangefilters heavy metals like lead and mercury.
  • Absolute Sub-Micron Mechanical Filtrationcaptures asbestos and chlorine resistant cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia.

The filters last up to 6 months. Replacement is simply with the twist off design.

The Proof

Here, guys, is the visual proof that this filter system works. Take a look at these unedited images that I took of two bottles of water – one with filtered tap water and the other with unfiltered tap water:

Unfiltered Tap Water

The unfiltered water image disgusted me. How did I not see that stuff before….I’ve been drinking that, y’all!!

If the images alone do not motivate you enough to filter your own tap water, then I don’t know what would convince you. You could buy water bottles…but who really wants to have to store it in a special spot in their house? PLUS, make sure to remember to stock up every week or so?! You could have a fancy water cooler system, but again, you have to have a large enough space to set it up in AND remember to order the water. With an under counter system like the Aquasana, it’s out of sight, out of mind. It even tells you when it’s time to replace the filters around every 6 months!

In conclusion, I urge you to look into how safe your drinking water really is and invest in some sort of clean drinking water system. I’ve always trusted our water company to take special care of us, but we need to take that extra step ourselves.

Are you concerned about how safe your tap water really is?

When you think about having to do this, I know for me my skin crawls LOL I don’t even understand why we should but I am glad that these filters help in so many ways for me and my family to drink better water.

    • It is really ridiculous that we have to do this, but so glad that we are filtering our tap now. I couldn’t believe the difference in the last 2 images. *gag*

  • We’ve always filtered our water, regardless of the type of water it was. We’ve used Brita’s for years, however we don’t anymore. We have horrible, horrible well water. For a few years, we were filtering it and giving it to the pets, but i’m starting to question if that’s not what made my cat suddenly have health issues and pass. Now we buy spring water from a water place and sometimes just from a store. Regardless, though, it’s definitely important to filter your water, so you’re protected from all the yucky things that may be in it. I’ve personally never heard of aquasana filtration system, but it looks like an impressive one that people should really consider using! This is definitely an informative article and will hopefully open people’s eyes to the importance of filtering their drinking/cooking water.

    • Thank you, Ashley. It surely opened my eyes while doing the research and just SEEING the results myself. I’m sorry about your furbabies. I do know that well water is the worst. My father-in-law has it and we used to live with him years ago. We would never, ever drink or cook with it and they always buy their water. They would have so many gallons of water taking up the floor space of the walk-in pantry. My house is not big enough for all that mess. It also destroys the dishwasher, sinks, and toilets. Imagine what it would do to your insides!

  • I NEED THIS!! We have the nastiest tasting water in the country, I swear! I don’t even drink it anymore but have my water delivered to us weekly. It’s that bad. Maybe if I had something like this I would save money because water delivery isn’t cheap. Will have to look into this. BTW how easy was it to install?

    Reply
    • It wasn’t so bad to install. The hubs kept saying he wasn’t a plumber so wasn’t too confident about his work but he did a great job and it didn’t take long. Just make sure the hoses are attached tight, but not too tight. He did make that mistake…LOL. I only chose not to include an image of it installed because our cabinet is weird under the sink & isn’t easy to hang it on the side of the wall in it. It is sitting on a shelf inside the sink cabinet for now but should be easy to remove/replace the filters. They twist off with a special tool included.

  • I still drink tap water because I don’t want to buy bottled water because of the plastic. A under the counter filter sounds like it would work for me so I am going to look into this system.

  • I filter our water just because it improves the taste to me. Now I’m glad I do after reading this!

  • I had a filter on my water but it was not enough. It cost major money, took up a lot of room in the basement and just did not work as well as it should have. 🙁

I buy drinking water right now, but have used filtration systems in the past. We use tap water for cooking, but e-coli was recently discovered in our city’s water supply. I will be looking into a new filtration system right away. Thanks for your informative review.

I had no idea the numbers were that high, pretty scary really! I do use a filter that’s on the sonk and then i have a filtered pitcher that i keep filled for my keurig. It really does help keep it cleaner longer and tastes so much better too!

Oh my this is a good post! We only drink filtered water. We live right at the bottom of a buried uranium mine so we don’t really have a choice. It is pretty alarming about how bad the water is and how many people do not know. Awesome that you are helping to spread the word!

    • Thank you, Brandi! I would say that is definitely a reason to drink filtered water… Wow!

I grew up drinking nothing but tap water from the kitchen sink. I don’t even think there was bottled water back then or filters to buy for your faucets. I shudder to think of all the toxins I drank through the years. I never drink anything but purified bottled water now.

  • After water softeners and carbon tanks the makes use of for media tanks are very similar to the housing filters. There are as many makes use of for these tanks as there are water issues. You probably have the house, it is a very efficient means of conquering even the worst water issues in your house.

  • Never realised how weird drinking tap water was for the US. In the UK we know that certain places have different tastes to tap water, but tap water is the norm. I only buy bottled water if I’m out and about and forgot to fill up my own.
