Mosquitos and insects

Insect bites can be annoying and mosquitos can carry malaria, so you want to try and keep these out of the house wherever possible. If you think that there is a nest, then you should call a mosquito control company.

Some simple things that you can do are to ensure that any doors and screens are in good repair, with no holes for them to squeeze through. Mosquitos and insects are often attracted to stagnant water too, so try not to let this collect too near your home and change the water in flower vases and pet bowls regularly.

Rats and mice

There are all sorts of reasons you don’t want rats and mice on your property. They can cause a lot of damage to your home as well as be a source of disease. They are industrious little creatures and will find even the smallest way into your home they can, so you have to be vigilant. If traps aren’t doing the trick, a pest control company can remove them for you, but then you will need to take steps to make your home less appealing and accessible to them.

Start by sealing up any holes around your property that they might be able to get into. This can include around drains and pipes and under doors. Be thorough when you do this and don’t assume a hole is too small for them to get through. It isn’t.

Next, remove anything that might be attracting them, such as food that might be lying around. Seal everything in air-tight containers and have a good clean to remove any food and debris. This includes things like dog food and birdseed too.

You should do this both inside your home and in the surrounding areas and outbuildings. You’ll need to keep this up too.

Rats and mice love places to hide, so don’t give them areas close to your house to do this, or they will be popping in for a visit. Remove any clutter, rubbish ad old furniture.

Spiders

Some people don’t mind spiders, but others can’t stand to have them in the house. While it’s almost impossible to keep spiders out permanently, there are ways to discourage them.

These include sealing all cracks around doors and windows. Keep your rooms tidy and clutter-free, spiders love piles of clothes and shoes.

Most spiders don’t like the smell of citronella, so find a citronella candle or air freshener to make your home less appealing. There are also some herbs and plants that they aren’t keen on, such as basil, lavender, and eucalyptus.

Conclusion

Make your home your own again by following these tips to keep unwanted guests out. They are common sense and easy to do, so will be easy to incorporate into your routine.

  • Thank you for sharing such helpful info! Another common cause of having pests in the home is dirty air ducts. They need to be cleaned once a year, otherwise, dust and debris accumulated there will make it quite attractive to pests to live there.

  • Thank you for sharing such a good article! I also want to add a few words about air ducts. Dirty air ducts are a favorable environment for pests. To prevent them from breeding there, clean air ducts in your home. HVAC specialists recommend doing air duct cleaning once every five to seven years.
