Hurricane and Disaster Kit Tips

Hurricane and Disaster Kit Tips >> Daily Deals from a Nerd Mom

It’s getting close to that time of year here in Florida – Hurricane Season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th. Having a Hurricane Kit was always a must growing up and my mom would keep a few plastic totes stocked with what we would need in case of one. Now that I am married with my own children, we have our own kit that I have built up. These kits aren’t just for hurricanes.

Anyone anywhere should have one ready for any disaster. In 2004, we went through 3 different hurricanes. During the 1st one, Hurricane Charley, my in-laws were without power for 2 weeks. I have put together some tips on how to make your own kit and one recommendation is to have a weather radio, such as the Encore Buddy by freeplay, so that you can keep up with what is going on even without electricity.

Encore Buddy Weather Alert Radio

A great weather radio is one that you can use when the power is out so you can keep up to date with what is going on around you. This is why I recommend the Encore Buddy, because not only is it a nice, clear sounding radio, it has so many more features that are a must during any disaster.

Encore Buddy Features:

  • Weather Alert Function – when on, the radio will automatically broadcast NOAA (US version) emergency weather alerts for your area.
  • Digital Tuner – always pick up the stations that you want on AM/FM or NOAA emergency weather alerts.
  • Back-lit Display
  • Quad Power – powers up 4 different ways (Solar Panel, Hand Crank, USB connector, or optional AC Adapter)
  • Charging Dock – Charge your mobile devices with the included micro, mini and USB Charging Tips. Power will “dump charge” to your device. A fully charged Encore Buddy will charge most devices up to 25%.
  • LED Flashlight – 3 LED lights are bright enough to light your way when the power is out.
  • Retractable Antenna
  • Wrist Lanyard
  • Audio Out for Headphones
  • Available at Amazon.com for $69.99

Hurricane and Disaster Kit Tips

More items to include in your basic Disaster Kit should be:

  • WATER – 1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days. This is for drinking as well as sanitation.
  • FOOD – at least a 3 day supply of non-perishable foods. Make sure this is for each person.
  • MANUAL CAN OPENER
  • RADIO/NOAA Weather Radio – battery or hand-cranked power plus extra batteries.
  • FLASHLIGHT – plus extra batteries
  • FIRST AID KIT
  • CELL PHONE – include charger or solar charger
  • MOIST TOWELETTES/BABY WIPES – for personal sanitation
  • LOCAL MAPS
  • WHISTLE – to signal for help
  • BASIC TOOLS – including wrench, pliers, and screwdrivers. These are great in case you need to shut off utilities.
  • DUST MASKS/PLASTIC SHEETING/DUCT TAPE – to protect yourself against contamination as well as close in your area
  • BLANKETS/PILLOWS
  • SOAP/DETERGENT BOTTLES – I like to fill up empty soap bottles with water and store them in the garage. This would come in handy for hand/body washing as well with the leftover soap in the bottles.

Having these items together ahead of time will save you from making that emergency trip just before a storm or hurricane along with a crowd of people. In those times, the shelves are usually cleared and it’s hard to find anything. This will also give you more time to be at home making preparations on your home to prevent as much damage as you can.

I hope this helps you to be prepared and STAY SAFE!

  • We actually just used our “disaster” radio last weekend because, well honestly, it was the only radio we could find to listen to the baseball game while at the pool. BUT at least we know it works!!! They are always good to have around!

  • I have things that I would use in a disaster situation, but they aren’t all together. I really need to keep them where I could grab them in a seconds time! I also love that radio, I will be looking into getting one of those!

  • Great tips. I always try to have a flashlight on me at all times. You never know anything that could happen. That’s a great kit you have there.
