Your Dos and Don'ts for Longer, Healthier Hair

DO – Find the right hair products for your hair type

Everyone’s hair type is different, which is why it’s important to find the right kind of products for your hair type. Working out the best hair products for your hair type will depend on you working out what your hair type is. Do you have oily, damaged or dry hair? Perhaps you have scalp issues that need addressing? Whatever your specific hair issue, there’ll be products out there made to support it.

DON’T – Overprocess your hair

Whether you color or chemically treat your hair, these types of treatments can cause damage that could be preventing growth. Overprocessed hair can be dry and brittle, making it susceptible to breakage caused by brushing and heat styling.

Try to stay away from harsh bleaching and chemicals to give your hair a chance to grow. You could consider going darker, with some stunning dark brown hair color ideas that are very on-trend right now. Your stylist will be able to make recommendations on the types of colors that will suit you best.

DO – Avoid styling with heat as much as possible

Heat styling is another thing that can affect hair growth. Using heated tools every day will fry your hair, causing it to snap and rendering any growth from the root useless. While styling with heat is a great way to achieve straight hair or curls, there are other ways you can style your hair without heat to give your hair the best chance of growth.

DON’T – Neglect your diet

As well as taking steps to protect your hair, you can help strengthen it and prepare it for growth through your diet. A diet rich in protein and biotin can help you grow stronger hair, and you’ll notice a difference in your nails too! Some top foods for hair growth include eggs, spinach, sweet potato and avocados. A balanced diet is great for your overall health, so you’ll get much more out of it than hair growth.

DO – Consider taking supplements

If you’re worried that you’re not getting the right amount of vitamins to keep you healthy, you should consider taking supplements that can help you with your hair growth. You can find different hair vitamins targeted at hair growth, but you can also find general supplements in health food stores and pharmacies. Remember that supplements shouldn’t replace your diet, and you should always put a healthy diet first.

DON’T – Avoid your stylist

You might think that the best way to let your hair grow is not to cut it. It’s a great theory, but you’ll only end up having to cut it off if it grows through damaged and fine. Regular trims to the ends of your hair can help make sure it stays healthy, keeping the ends blunt. Explain to your hairstylist that you’re growing your hair and they’ll be able to trim the recommended amount and advise you of how often you need to go back.

DO – Use hair treatments

Using hair treatments can be a great way of restoring your hair’s condition and giving it a dose of vitamins and nutrients. But you don’t need to spend a fortune on pricey hair treatments to get results. There are some amazing DIY spa treatments for your hair that will help you boost your hair’s shine, and to help strengthen it. Why not treat yourself to a pamper evening and give your hair the treatment it deserves? With regular treatments, you could see some big improvements in the condition of your hair, making it easier to style and encourage growth.

DON’T – Fall for products claiming to miraculously grow hair

There are many products on the market that will claim to be a ‘miracle’ product for hair growth. The truth is, you should be wary of any product that makes these sorts of claims, as nobody can ever really guarantee hair growth. Always do your research before spending your money on products that seem too good to be true. With online reviews readily available, you can get some great insights into what works before you spend your money.

DO – Sleep on silk

The way you treat your hair can have a big impact on its ability to grow. It’s delicate and deserves to be treated with kindness! One way you can really treat your hair is to sleep on silk. Silk pillowcases, hair turbans and scrunchies are perfect for friction-less sleep for your hair. This will help you maintain your blow out and any other styling, helping to keep your hair smooth and frizz-free. Silk pillowcases can also help your skin too, so why not treat yourself to a luxury sleep that will help with your hair growth and your complexion?

DON’T – Give up!

If you’re feeling frustrated by your hair growth progress, it’s important that you don’t give up. Keeping up your routine will help you see results in the end – it just takes time. Take progress photos so you can see the difference your efforts are making. You might not realize it, but you’re not only helping your hair grow, but making it stronger to keep your hair healthy too. Even if you don’t notice substantial growth straight away, you’re sure to see your efforts reflected in the health and condition of your hair.

Growing your hair takes a long time, but if you’re willing to put the effort in, your hard work will pay off!

  • Love that you covered both the dos and don’ts of hair care. Heat from blow-dryers and flat iron can cause damage to the hair, so it’s best to avoid stylish using those tools. Of course, taking supplements that will help with hair growth is a good idea.
