Smoked Sausage and Cabbage Stew

Smoked Sausage and Cabbage Stew is one of our favorite one-pot meals to make. My mother-in-law first introduced it to me but she didn’t make it as a stew. I leave all the brothy goodness in mine when I make it and also add a stick of butter (we LOVE butter!) and bouillon cubes for extra flavor. You can choose to drain out the broth before serving or keep it as a stew. I use a slotted spoon for those who do not want it, this way the others that do can enjoy it.

I normally make this with beef smoked sausage and beef bouillon but this time the hubs bought chicken smoked sausage to switch it up. It was really tasty and probably how I will make it from now on. I switched the bouillon to chicken this time as well.

The kids aren’t that crazy about cabbage and will only eat it if I make it either this way or stuffed cabbage. I haven’t made this in a crock pot yet but I bet it would be amazing!

The recipe below is what I make for 5 people with plenty of leftovers for lunch the next couple of days. You can easily cut the recipe in half if you need to.

Ingredients

  • 2  13 oz. packages of smoked sausage; sliced into bite-sized pieces (I used Chicken)
  • 1 lb. baby carrots
  • 1 large head of cabbage; chunked
  • 6 large potatoes; peeled & chunked (I used red potatoes)
  • 6 bouillon cubes (beef or chicken, depending on the type of smoked sausage you use. I used chicken.)
  • 1/2 – 1 stick of butter (optional)
  • Salt & Pepper (optional, to taste)

Directions

  1. Add the carrots, butter, and bouillon to a stock pot with water and start boiling them while chunking the cabbage.
  2. Add the cabbage to the water and add just enough water until it comes underneath the top layer of the cabbage. Bring to a boil.
  3. Add potatoes and sausage, stir up & bring to a boil again.Smoked Sausage and Cabbage Stew
  4. Cook until carrots and potatoes are soft enough.
  5. Enjoy 🙂

  • I do a similar stew but I sometimes add a bit of lentil peas as well, not too much because I don’t want it to be a lentil soup. 🙂 I’ve never tried it with smoked sausage though, we would either use chicken or I would use beef. Either way they all taste good.

    • Sounds good! I have never made anything with lentil peas before but I could see it being a nice addition to this stew. Thanks for the suggestion! This was our first time using the chicken sausage and it was good, but I think I prefer beef.

I eat way more cabbage in the winter months then the summer. I work at food manufacturing so lots of times we toss out Cabbage (usually ours is cut, we have two different cuts from various machines) Our heads of cabbage though are usually larger then a persons head LOL, so would 5kgs of cabbage do? Like I said, we toss this stuff out, and sometimes we throw out up to 100 kgs of this stuff.

    • Hi, Sabina. I think I would love having access to all of that cabbage personally! I would say that if the cabbage heads you have are so large, then maybe go with half of it for this recipe? I’m not sure about the kgs, lol sorry.

    • You are very welcome, Sam. 🙂 It really is a great stew for a cool evening but I enjoy it any time of the year (I have a slight obsession with soups and stews :p )

  • To be honest, we only eat cabbage once a year – on St. Patrick’s Day. I have no idea why we don’t eat it more often, I love cabbage! Thank you for the recipe, I will definitely have to try it out!

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I don’t think I even have thyme in the pantry but will add it to the shopping list so I can try it next time. 🙂
