Good for sensitive skin and allergies

One of the biggest benefits of making your own cleaning products is that you can do away with lots of the harsh chemicals that are often found in commercial products. Many of these chemical compounds can cause irritation if they come into contact with the skin, and leave you fighting to soothe itchy skin or burning skin. If anyone in your family has sensitive skin, or especially if they have conditions like eczema, this is a really huge benefit that will undoubtedly make a big difference to their health.

Great for improving air quality

A lot of people think that they only have to worry about the quality of the air they breathe outdoors but actually, the home can be much more troublesome when it comes to air pollution than even the busy town center, in some cases. So, if you or your family members suffer from asthma breathing difficulties, or lung conditions, it is a really good idea to do what you can to improve your home’s air quality.

Making your own cleaning products is an excellent way to do this because as mentioned above, many commercial cleaning agents contain problematic chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, which can irritate the lungs and make breathing harder for people who already struggle.

Homemade cleaning products are better for pets

If you have cats or dogs, then making your own cleaning products is smart because, as you will undoubtedly know they get into everything and they will lick floors and other surfaces without a second thought. When they do this, you want to know that they are not taking in any harsh chemicals that could cause them stomach upsets or worse. By using natural ingredients like baking soda and white vinegar, you can keep your home clean while also resting easy that your animals will be perfectly safe.

Maintain a wonderful smelling home

There is no denying that many commercially available cleaning agents have a pleasant enough smell but there is also no denying that they tend to have a harsh chemical profile in the background. When you make your own cleaning products, you can either leave them neutral or use natural essential oils such as lemon oil or bergamot to scent them. These essential oils not only smell wonderful without the harsh chemical undertones, but they tend to fill up and freshen the whole home for hours to come. So, if you care about a home that always smells fresh and inviting, making your own cleaning products is a real no-brainer.

Declutter your home

When you choose to make your own cleaning products, you can find simple recipes that utilize few ingredients but which are effective for multiple purposes, whether it be cleaning your floors or sanitizing your kitchen countertops.

If you are the kind of person who prefers a clutter-free home, this is really good news because it means you can get rid of all those cleansing product bottles from your cupboards and make more space in your home overall. Yes, you will still need to store a few basics, but they will take up far less space overall if you choose the right recipes and create the best cleaning products for multiple purposes.

Save money by making your own cleaning products

Of course, if you choose to start making your own cleaning products, you will inevitably save a lot of money over the years too. You can bulk buy the main ingredients for natural cleaning products, like baking soda and lemon juice, in bulk for very little and it will last you a long time. That means, your own cleaning products will be much cheaper than the commercially available alternatives which you need to replenish on a regular basis, and which cost several dollars for just a small bottle.

Natural cleaning products are better for the environment

Because they are made with completely natural ingredients, it is fair to say that the vast majority of homemade cleaning products are better for the environment than their store-bought counterparts.

It is becoming increasingly clear that we all need to take environmental concerns far more seriously than we are right now if we want our children to have the same safe and secure futures that we have benefited from, and although this is just one small thing, it really can make a big difference.

Better for fabrics

DIY cleaning products are really good for use with fabrics. Harsher chemicals can often discolor or otherwise harm the integrity of fabrics from carpets to curtains but natural cleaning agents are far less likely to do this overall. Obviously, you still need to check which ingredients you plan to use and how they will interact with the specific fabric you will be using them on, but this is really easy thanks to the internet and providing you follow instructions, yo wu will probably find that fabrics last longer before washing out or disintegrating when you treat them with more natural products.

Perfect for your peace of mind

When you have total control over the cleaning products you use, you can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly which chemicals are being pumped around your home. You will not have to worry about poor air quality, allergies being aggravated or best of all, the kids somehow getting access to your cleaning products and drinking them, which is sadly all too common and can have devastating results!

As you can see, making your own cleaning products can really help to improve the health of your family and your home, especially if one or more of you have allergies or respiratory illnesses such as asthma.

  • Thank you for bringing it up! I want to add something about drains cleaners. Some commercial drains cleaners are so harsh that they can even corrode the pipes. That’s not even to mention the danger they pose to health. To clean drains, it’s better to use homemade less harsh products or call a pro if soda and vinegar are not enough.

    • Yeah, off-the-shelf cleaners can do more harm than good. The corrosion they cause can cause leaks and even bursts of the pipes.
