Trying to Find the Holiday Spirit in Florida

Getting into the Christmas spirit is hard when you live in the Sunshine State. Holiday movies and TV shows depict Christmas as being snowy and having to bundle up. I’m just trying to find the holiday spirit in Florida.

Now, I’m not complaining about it not snowing here. Not at all. I hate snow, but when us Floridians basically only get 2 seasons, Summer and Not-So-Summer, it’s hard for my brain to transition into the festiveness of it all. I mean, we’ve had our windows for the past two days for crying out loud! It’s gorgeous outside. Nothing screams, “Santa is coming!”

We have already put our tree up and decorated around the house. Not too much, but I do have my tiny Christmas village set up as well as the handmade Nativity scene passed down to me from my great-grandmother. The Nativity is my most favorite Christmas decor ever and no one is aloud to touch it. Even still, we just weren’t feeling the Christmas-ness of it all.

It’s a tradition that the kids decorate the tree every year. Also, I think we need more ornaments!

Tonight, though, I was able to finally get that warm fuzzy holiday feeling. I bought hot cocoa and marshmallows while grocery shopping. I was determined to get into the holiday spirit. While eating dinner, I found a Christmas movie on TV to watch together with the family, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Who doesn’t love that?!

Afterwards, Arthur Christmas came on and we watched that. It was pretty cute, different, but cute. When that was over, The Son actually looked at me and asked if there were anymore Christmas movies or shows on. I was shocked! This kid rarely sits down long enough for one show or movie! I scrolled through Freeform‘s lineup for the next week and set a bunch of shows and movies coming up to record.

We were finally starting to feel that holiday cheer. That nice, warm and fuzzy holiday feeling. The Teen looked over at me while sipping her hot cocoa with a smile and said, “I’m finally feeling like it’s Christmas.” I couldn’t agree any more.

Are you still trying to get in the holiday mood or are you full-blown Operation Christmas?

  • Hey don’t feel bad. I am having a hard time getting into the spirit this year as well. Even though I live in PA where we do get snow, there isn’t any snow here yet (and I’m glad for that!). A little dusting on Christmas day is ok. I am hoping wrapping gifts gets me more into the spirit.

    • I hope it helps you get into the spirit too. If not, kick back & enjoy some good ol’ hot cocoa and Christmas movie 🙂

  • I can imagine it’s definitely hard to try to get into the holiday spirit when you live in Florida. Sadly, and yes I really mean sadly, I can’t relate, since I live in New York. And, not only that, but I live in one of the snowiest and coldest areas in the US. However, I think the older you get, the harder it is to get into the holiday spirit, whether you have children or not. Trust me, when i say this, snow does NOT make you get into the holiday spirit. LOL. If anything, it makes you miserable, unless you enjoy snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. Regardless, I’m glad to hear that you guys have started getting into the holiday spirit and that movies were what really helped you to do so. FYI, love your Christmas tree. It’s cute! The kids did a great job, too! 🙂

    • Thanks, Ashley! I can’t imagine living in snow. I did as a baby/toddler but don’t remember it at all. I’m totally fine with that LOL

  • I totally understand as it was always hard for me in Myrtle Beach to get into the holiday mood with 80 plus degrees. Your tree looks amazing! BTW a lot of people on MB would decorate their trees beach style with painted sand dollars and shells…. very cool but definitely different. Thanks for sharing 🙂
