Why Your Kids Need A Dog

It’s safe to say that most people love pets. The adults who loved pets often had them when they were children, and the children who get pets often turn into better adults. Pets can offer a different type of companionship and unconditional love, and dogs are great for this. There are so many breeds that can create a very special bond with your children, and being able to have a pet in the home is going to help your children to learn responsibility, too.

Not only can your children help out with things like training and working with experts in dog training, you’ll be able to do so many more things with a dog in the home. You may not have considered the dog before, preferring to stick to smaller animals, but in this blog we are going to talk to you through all the reasons why your kids need a dog in the home.

  • For their emotional development. One of the biggest benefits of dogs with children is that they are extremely useful to develop important emotions such as empathy and compassion. Dogs are able to tune into energies and our emotions very easily, and if your child is exposed to that from a young age, they are going to learn to do the same thing and they’re going to learn to treat the dog with respect.
  • For exercise. It’s not just your dog that you have to ensure gets adequate exercise, but your children, too. If your children have a dog, they will be coming with you on walks and during exercise times for your dog. This will get them out into nature, having a great run around, and even give them a chance to play with the dog outside.
  • For their confidence. Did you know that there are children out there who have dogs specifically for anxiety? Even if your children aren’t particularly anxious, there are plenty of studies to show that the relationship between child and dog has an impact on certain emotions and one of them is in dissipating feelings of anxiety. Your child will feel much more confident when they have a dog by their side.
  • For making friends. If you’ve ever been to the park and seen any dog owners out there, they’re all very social and chatting together. Every time somebody has a dog and he’s walking in public there’s always a chance to socially interact. If you are looking to meet new people, you might find that your children would benefit from having a dog so that they can feel more confident in their social interactions.

Before you adopt or buy a dog, it’s good to do some research on the varying breeds out there. You want to make sure that you bring a dog into the home that is looking to live with children, can manage living with children, and your children can manage living with a dog. It’s a big responsibility and you all must be on board.

  1. So many great benefits! We just have cats. I don’t think any of us would have the patience for a dog.

  2. My boys would love a dog but sadly one is allergic to them. We have to explore other animals.

    1. get a hypoallergenic dog. My Yorkie doesn’t shed. I keep him cut most of the time so his fur is shorter and hold less allergens.

  3. I wasn’t a dog person until I got my chihuahua after my son was born. I don’t know what it was about him but he got super attached to me. Then in 2014, my Yorkie, buddy came along and I’m hooked. He picked up my chronic pain as a puppy. It’s like he knew when I needed to laugh due to him being silly while playing, snuggling, or giving me kisses. He has been there for me through my divorce and still knows when I need extra love. He sleeps in arm or on my chest at night. I dread the day he gets too old to have a quality life. He is 10.5. But I’ll definitely adopt another Yorkie to spoil.

I also currently have a boxer mix. She is a bit more of a handful because she is so strong. But she always loves to be close for the most part unless my son is home. That’s his dog now. She started out as my daughter’s dog but when she got married. She tried to take her to her new home but the other two dogs and her didn’t really get along so well. Their dogs have stayed with me a few times and I got them to get along but she knows I’m the pack leader. She even gets along with my cat.

I never liked dogs before they because they always seemed to be attracted to other people. Plus my parents never let us have an indoor dog. Potty training was super stressful. So I was more of a cat person. They were more self sufficient.

I love having dogs now. My boxer mix is 6. I don’t know if I’ll get another big dog again. But then again, as a single mom and being alone a lot having a guard dog is nice.

    1. Your story is so heartwarming! It sounds like each of your pets found their own special place in your life just when you needed them most. I totally understand what you mean about your Yorkie’s intuitive nature and ability to pick up on your pain—animals have such an amazing way of comforting us, especially when they seem to just “know” when we need it most. Your boxer mix sounds like she’s found her place as a loyal protector, too, which must be comforting, especially as a single mom.

It’s wonderful that you’ve opened your heart to these dogs, especially coming from a cat-person background! It must be so fulfilling to experience that kind of unconditional love from your furry family members. Thank you so much for sharing your story; it’s a beautiful reminder of the deep bond we can have with our pets.

  5. I agree with you that having a dog has a lot of benefits however, I still believe that the need for a dog/ pet shouldn’t be the main deciding factor in getting one. Instead, do the kids/ family have the capacity and commitment to take care of a dog?

  6. These are great reasons for buying a dog. We had our first fur baby a few years before I had my daughter. She grew up with our dog until we had to say goodbye when my daughter was 5 or 6. She learned about saying goodbye to a pet at that age. Then we got a sweet chihuahua who bonded with my daughter right away. We are so grateful to have had both dogs in our lives and cherish those moments.

I grew up with three dogs around me. I am very shy type person and they help me build my confidence in interacting to others.
