How To Protect Your Home While You're On Vacation

Whether you’re heading out on a family road trip or going to spend some time lounging by a pool, you don’t want to spend your holidays worrying about your home. However, as 40% of burglaries happen while people are on vacation, this is a real concern for many.

Fortunately, this can be remedied by taking steps to protect your home before you travel. Read on to find out more.

Carry out necessary maintenance

Maintenance tasks, such as repair garage door are tasks that you simply cannot afford to ignore in the run up to your vacation. Otherwise, this could serve as a clear entryway into your home! As such, make sure that you complete these repairs before packing your bags, giving you much greater peace of mind moving forward.

Lock all your doors and windows

Locking all of your doors and windows may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by just how many people forget to complete these basic security tasks on a daily basis. As such, be sure to do a cursory lap throughout your home checking all of your doors and windows before departing – do not leave anything to chance.

Have someone open your curtains/blinds

If a friend or family member is stopping by to take care of your pet or water your plants, ask them to close or open your blinds each day when doing so. This makes it look as though someone is at home, as opposed to making it obvious that there’s no-one around. For the most part, this acts as a pretty good deterrent against crimes such as theft and burglary.

Invest in security cameras

Security cameras are another great way to give you peace of mind while traveling, especially if you are going to be away for long periods of time. This is because they allow you to quickly access live footage of your home’s interior and exterior, so you know exactly what is going on. They can also send you alerts when necessary. Furthermore, while they aren’t necessarily a form of protection, they are a significant deterrent.

Install security alarms

Installing security alarms that alert authorities, yourself and trusted friends or family are also incredibly beneficial when it comes to protecting your home while you are away. This is because it means that more immediate action can be taken, and you do not need to come home from your trip to find that your entire property has been ransacked.

Nobody should come home from their vacation to find that their home has been burgled. After all, this is the easiest way to make your safe space feel no longer safe. Fortunately, there are many steps that you can take to prevent this from happening, from ensuring that your doors and entryways are secure to installing security alarms. This way, the only thing you have to worry about when getting back from vacation is unpacking or dealing with sunburn!

  2. I do worry when we’re away. We do have a Ring camera and other security cameras, so I do feel better there. Plus my Mom checks on the house.

  3. That’s a great idea to have someone come over and open the curtains to make it look like you’re home. Yes, definitely important to repair your garage door if it’s not working!

Appreciate all these tips! Very timely since we’ll be travelling again this weekend. We’re actually thinking about installing security alarms soon.
