Home Safety Tips Every Family Needs to Know

You live your life day in and day out. Between commuting to work and transporting your kids around or taking care of the family home, you are busy. With all of that activity, sometimes safety becomes an afterthought. Continue reading to learn a few home safety tips you may not have at the top of your mind that will help you keep your home safe.

Always Lock Up Weapons

If anyone in your family has possession of weapons, such as guns, you need to invest in a gun safe with a secure vault door to ensure everyone’s continued safety. Make it a family rule to lock the guns up as soon as the weapon carrier enters the home and keep them locked until the owner leaves again. Store code numbers or the safe key in a secret location that only the adults in the home have access to. Be aware that kids notice things, so be discreet when accessing the safe’s contents and the key and avoid keeping it on your car key fob.

Look Outside Before Opening the Door

It is always good practice to teach everyone in the household about proper door safety. If you hear a knock at the door, always check outside to see who is there before answering. If it is someone you do not know, remember that this is your home, and you do not need to give anyone access. Consider installing a doorbell camera so you can communicate with people without opening the door. Teach your younger kids and even teenagers to be cautious about opening the door to strangers and to avoid doing so when they are home alone.

Install a Home Security System

Home security systems have come a long way and are more commonplace than ever. They are easy to install and relatively simple to use. All you need is a smartphone, a smart doorbell and security system, and a corresponding app on your phone. Some smart TVs have the option to install the company app on your TV, so if you are watching a show, you can toggle to the app and see who’s outside. Place security cameras at strategic locations outside your home and inside if you are comfortable. Add window and door sensors so you will receive an alert when the alarm is activated or any entry point is open.

A criminal lawyer will be called for someone who decides to break into a home and gets caught. If they break into YOUR home, you need as much evidence as possible so that you can ensure that they are punished for the crime committed. Having a home security system that videos what went wrong is important.

Have a Home Phone Line

In this day and age, everyone seems to have a smartphone, so families forego analogue telephone lines as they are considered obsolete. This may be the case, but what if your child is old enough to stay home alone for a short period of time but too young to give them their own phone? This is a problem for many households where kids are in the middle years. If your house is already wired for analogue, invest in a couple of cordless phones for your home and teach everyone how to use them. Keep a list of phone numbers nearby and encourage family members to memorize them.

  2. I have a security door on both of my entry doors so I can open the inside door. I need to start looking out the window more before I open the door.

  4. I do have a Ring security system. I initially bought it to check on my cat whilst I am away, but now it’s covering my entire house.
