As a busy parent, you’re probably wondering which health professionals you need to work with to support the development of your child. Unfortunately, this process can seem long and tiresome, given how many potential issues could afflict your offspring. Fortunately, we’ve compiled a quick list of the most essential health professionals you’ll want to work with if you are raising children. Here are our recommendations:

As always, you’ll want to start with a primary care physician. Ideally, this person should be a pediatrician, a doctor with specialist expertise in treating conditions that affect children. They should be able to monitor things like their physical health, general developments, and overall growth, and flag issues that can then be dealt with by other specialists. If you’re really lucky, you might be able to find a developmental-behavioral pediatrician. These experts have all of the knowledge of regular pediatricians, but they can also deal with behavioral challenges like autism and ADHD.

Another healthcare professional to work with is a speech-language pathologist. These doctors can support your child with understanding, speaking, articulation, and communication. They can show them how to be expressive with words and communicate effectively with the people around them.

Physical therapists focus more on gross motor skills and help your child connect with their bodies. Many children find it difficult to translate the ideas about movement that they have in their minds into the physical world. They can find it hard to maneuver their bodies into the right position in certain situations, and this becomes more apparent once they go to school.

Sports can be challenging for a lot of young kids, which is why working with physical therapists can help. They understand the movement limitations that children often face and offer corrective procedures.

You might also want to find a pediatric ENT to support your child’s development. Unfortunately, children can lose their sense of hearing almost overnight, often because of infections or blocked ear canals. That’s why it’s so important to have somebody who can regularly monitor their ability to hear so that their development continues as normal. In many ways, an ENT or an audiologist is one of the most important partners you should establish for your child. Without somebody monitoring their senses, they can fall behind in their speech and language and find it difficult to communicate with others in the future.

Finally, you might want to work with a child psychologist or a counsellor. A child psychologist is somebody who helps children regulate and understand their emotions. They can also assist with coping with stress and working through behavioural challenges related to anxiety. A child psychiatrist is the next level up. They can formally diagnose children’s mental health conditions and provide them with a treatment plan, including medications if necessary.

In most healthcare systems, the paediatrician is the key gateway to other services that the child may need to access. Maintaining a regular relationship with this professional is essential.

  1. Yes, we had a lot of these–my son has autism, so when he was growing up we had all sorts of specialists. My daughter does see a therapist every 2 weeks!

This list covers the essential specialists perfectly. A pediatrician really is the best gateway for finding the right speech, physical, or emotional support.

  6. Though it’s not very common here in the Philippines for families to have a child psychologist for their kids, I do agree that having an ongoing relationship with a professional can be very beneficial. It helps create a safe and familiar space where children can express themselves and receive support whenever they need it.

  7. These drs and professionals are useful especially if your child has special needs. My daughter was born with a severe to profound hearing loss. She had to meet with a bunch of doctors before she was able to be approved for a cochlear implant. We met with an ENT, speech therapist, audiologist, and more. It’s been too long to remember them all. But she had a team of doctors rooting for her success. Her cochlear implant was successful and she was able to hear somewhat normally out of one ear. At the time she got implanted, they only did one. She got the second one done as a teen and it wasn’t as successful. 😦
