When I first came across the term MilSim, my reaction was “wait, what’s that?” So I did what any self-respecting nerd mom does – I went down a rabbit hole.
MilSim stands for Military Simulation, and it’s basically airsoft taken to a whole new level. While casual airsoft is more of a recreational shooter game, MilSim events are structured to closely replicate real military operations – think coordinated teams, mission objectives, strict rules of engagement, and events that can run 24 to 48 hours straight. It’s less “backyard fun” and more “you need a whole operations order to show up.”
It’s not really my personal corner of the gaming world, but I know some of you are into tactical games, outdoor adventures, or just love a good challenge – and MilSim has a serious community behind it. So if you’ve ever been curious, or you’re already thinking about your first event, here’s a guide to help you actually show up ready.
Read Up On The Event’s Requirements
MilSim organizers run a tight ship, and anyone who falls foul of their rules and regulations can unexpectedly find themselves being denied entry, even if they have all their registration documents in order.
Happily, there’s no great mystery to what the organizers ask for and expect. They’ll publish it all in the OPORD (Operations Order), outlining everything that you need to know. Read it cover to cover, and get clarification for any unclear parts well in advance of the event.
Get The Right Gear – and Test It Beforehand
Having the right gear allows you to fully focus on the game. Plus, it can instill confidence – it’s always pretty fun to arrive at a MilSim event knowing that you have everything you need to look and act the part.
The core kit will include a helmet, chest rig, uniform, eye protection, radio, and ear pro. It’s also recommended to look at additional accessories, such as adding an IHPS Rail Headset Adapter, which allows for cleaner kit integration and more stable positioning. It’s a relatively small upgrade that can make a big difference during long events, when having a clean, tight kit can help you to fully focus on the task at hand.
Whichever gear you go for, be sure to test it before you arrive at the event. Wearing it for a few hours should tell you whether it’s comfortable or if some things need adjusting.
Managing Endurance
The focus is on the fun, but success in MilSim isn’t just about your prowess with your airsoft rifle. Your ability to manage endurance will also play a big role in your overall success or failure. Many first-time players make a few rookie errors that drain their energy, which quickly impacts their performance levels. The most common is powering through a rest period because they don’t feel tired. Even if you feel full of energy, it’s important to make full use of the rest period. After all, it’s a marathon.
On the Day
Arriving early allows you to go through the often time-consuming tasks, such as registration and briefings, while also having plenty of time to mentally prepare. Beyond that, it’s about embracing the experience. Things will go wrong, things will go right – what’s guaranteed is that you’ll have a great time, if you have the right attitude.
